Tourists from China are projected to make more than 5 billion trips this year, according to a report of China National Tourism Administration (CNTA). CNTA estimates that the Chinese travelers will spend more than RMB 5 trillion (USD 727 billion) with 97.5% of trips occurring within China. Chinese tourist attractions will continue to be popular, along with family outings, film and TV theme tours, as well as an increase in winter vacations thanks to the approaching 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
Overseas holidays will account for the remaining 2.5% of trips with Thailand, South Korea and Japan continuing to be the top three short-haul destinations for the Chinese tourists. As of January 2017, 61 countries and districts offer visa-free or visa-on-arrival travel for Chinese citizens—however, only about 5%-6% of Chinese possess a passport. Chinese tourists spent a record total of 4.66 trillion yuan (USD 682.2 billion) on 4.56 billion trips, equating to 3.5 trips per Chinese national. |
