Chinese tourism to Taiwan has been steadily rising it what may be a policy reversal. Taiwan still has a long way to go in terms of reaching the numbers of Chinese arrivals the island achieved in the past, with the highest figure being approximately 4.2 million in 2015. Still, the Taiwanese tourism industry has suffered little even with the drop and the recent rebound in Chinese tourism indicates that Beijing may be easing off its efforts to limit travel to Taiwan.
According to the Taiwanese Tourism Bureau, Chinese arrivals between May to December 2016 dropped by around 29 percent compared to the same period in 2015, from 2.82 million to 2 million. The figures for some months were even more dramatic, with Chinese arrivals in February 2017 down by 50 percent compared to the same month in 2016. Total Chinese arrivals for the year to November 2017 were at about 2.7 million, compared to 3.6 million for the same period for November 2016, representing a drop of approximately 25 percent.
